Let's Say Goodbye To An Old Friend - Freon

Let’s All Say Goodbye To An Old Friend (Freon)

Refrigerant R-22, commonly known as Freon, has had a pretty good run. It’s been used for many years in residential air conditioning systems, worldwide. So what’s the problem?

Well Freon R-22 contains chlorine, which when released into the air, is thought by some to be hurting the Earth’s Ozone Layer. Whether or not you believe that, it is being phased out. This phase-out began several years ago; however 2009 is the last year that any new equipment can be made using this refrigerant.

You will be able replace any that has leaked out of your existing air conditioning system for several years to come, with some restrictions. It probably will be getting harder to acquire, and more expensive as the years go by. It has all but been replaced by R-410a, commonly known as Puron.

This “new” refrigerant does not contain chlorine and is known as “the environmentally safe refrigerant”, and has been used for more than 10 years. Puron performs just like R-22 Freon. However, your old R-22 Freon system will never be able to be converted to this new refrigerant.

So, if it is time to replace any part of your older system, be aware of this change so you can make an informed decision.

As always, contact me with any questions.
