Spending Wisely Posted: November 2008
After more than 20 years in the heating and air conditioning business, I continue to be confused as to why some consumers will hire the low-priced contractor when they knew that their price was just too good to be true.
Their low prices are usually indicative that they are using inferior products and materials, providing shoddy workmanship, or taking shortcuts by not doing the work the way that it should have been done to keep their price low. It’s that simple.
Don’t be fooled by “Mr. Low Bidder”. Hire reputable contractors who have told you in detail, everything that you need to know when having this type of work done.
Good quality, properly installed heating and air conditioning systems last for about 20 years, that’s a long time. You would not be very happy when a new system, that you spent your hard-earned money on, began having problems after only a few years. This happens all too frequently.
I have seen several systems this past summer that were less than 10 years old and already needed to be replaced. I see many systems that were sold by contractors who knew very well how to do the bare minimum to get your check, never to be seen again. Since heating and air conditioning products and installations are fairly technical, it is easy for some contractors to take advantage of a homeowner’s good nature, and limited knowledge in this field.
You should consult with the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List to check the rating of any contractor, and if they have any complaints. Go with your instincts - not just your desire to pay the lowest amount. These guys know you’re out there. They make their living on a constant supply of new, unsuspecting consumers. Don’t be their next innocent victim. Spend your money wisely - you won’t regret it.
