Uh Oh ! It's Hot Again
Posted: August 2008

Summer has certainly arrived - with a vengeance. Due to the extreme cost of gasoline, you certainly can’t afford to drive anywhere, so I’m guessing you may be spending a little more time at home these days.

If that’s true, you’re probably using your air conditioning system more than usual, which means that if you have an older system, your electricity bill is likely higher as well. Older systems can use up to 60 percent more electricity than newer models.

I would not recommend replacing your functioning air conditioning system just to get one that uses less electricity. But if your system is more than 10 to 15 years old, uses R-22 Freon, has had a refrigerant leak, has needed frequent repairs or is just in bad shape, then replacing it is a no-brainer. Spending your money on repairs to keep an older system working just doesn’t make much sense when you could have a new system that will begin reducing your electric bill as soon as it is put into use.

Many people ask me when the best time is to replace their system. My answer is to have it replaced while it is still working. That way you can schedule the work to be done on your schedule, not when the machine has decided to stop working or is in need of yet another repair.

New, high-quality, properly installed equipment is never going to be priced as low as homeowners would like. So, be careful to avoid the most common mistake many homeowners make - choosing a new system based solely on a low price. This tactic will only insure that you’ll get a poor-quality job.
