Comfort '101'
Posted: December 2007

Eventually every heating and air conditioning system needs to be replaced. Hopefully, that’s after many years of reliable service. When a new system is needed, do your homework. Don’t rush into this decision before exploring all options. We live in California …. not Minnesota. So, you could suffer through a few chilly nights if the benefit was a better-quality heating and air conditioning system.

First, check out every contractor with The California Contractors License Board at www.cslb.ca.gov. to make sure that they are licensed, and that their Workers’ Compensation and Liability Insurance are both up-to-date. Next, check with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.com). They will list any complaints and show the rating of the company. You wouldn’t hire someone if you knew they had a lot of complaints - would you?

Look at the big picture. How long are you planning to stay in your home? If it is short term, then replacing components may a good choice. However, if you’re going to be there a while, replacing the entire system, including the ducts, could be a better choice.

Recent legislation has implemented new duct testing regulations in an effort to reduce energy consumption. This means that some duct systems will need to be checked. If the ducts leak more than allowed,  repairs or replacement may be required.

Lastly, don’t get fooled by the cheapest bid. Choose a reputable contractor, who provides you with a fair price, and explains the details regarding the work. Installing a new system isn’t the same as plugging in a new toaster. A proper installation can only be done by skilled technicians who have trained for many years.

A little time and effort can pay big dividends. Remember that your new heating and air conditioning system should last for about 20 – 25 years. Don’t sign any contract before you’re sure what you’re getting.
